A YEAR ago Bilbie Dan finished last on the Newcastle netball open championship ladder - today the young side will fight for a grand final berth.
Bilbie Dan meet minor premiers Nova in today's major semi-final at National Park for a shot at Nags Head Hotel in the grand final.
Bilbie Dan have never finished higher than second last, and players credit this year's turnaround to a renewed training commitment under new coach Tracey Bragg.
"I've coached top grade for a long time and won many finals, but the thrill of making it with these girls is better," Bragg said. "They've got so much ability, they'll be unbeatable in a few years."
Original Bilbie Dan member Emma Andrews said last year was "really hard for all of us".
"We just knew as a young team we had a long way to go compared to the other teams that have experience," Andrews said.
She said the side's best win was their two-point minor semi-final victory against last year's champions, BNC Albion 1A.
Bilbie Dan have been the only team to rattle minor premiers Nova, coming within a few points of winning in their two matches.
"Seeing we've come so close before, this time is it for us," Andrews said.
The side recruited youth from A grade this year including Andrews's sister, Tara.
"The young girls who came up are more committed this year, we've all stepped up," Tara said.
Nova will be without ex-Hunter Jaegers Tiffany Lincoln, to Australian Netball League commitments, and Katie Bradstock, who is in Hong Kong coaching.
