Dan puts hand up for Butcher Boys

13 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
THE first thing Knights enforcer Dan Tolar did in his return match for Central Charlestown was make a tackle in yesterday's Newcastle Rugby League match against Lakes United at St John Oval.

The second thing he did was jog straight back into the dressing sheds to get his dislocated finger cracked back into place.

The former Central junior, who has played 66 NRL matches for the Knights since he last played for the Butcher Boys nine years ago, started his comeback from a knee injury in their 44-24 win over Lakes.

"I just went in for the tackle and out she came," laughed Tolar, who was playing for the first time since injuring his knee in the Knights' loss to the Titans in round one on March 15.

"I put my hand up to the boys and they thought I was giving them the bird.

"What a great start. I was out there for a minute and then straight back off."

Easily recognisable with his flame red hair and new white boots, Tolar started on the bench and entered the fray after Central opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a try to Nathan Curry.

He was soon back on the bench and returned when Central got away to a 12-0 lead after hooker Shane Ryan scored the first of his two tries.

Tolar was asked by Knights coach Brian Smith to play between 20 and 30 minutes in his comeback, but he extended that to almost 40 after a relatively quiet first half which Central dominated to lead 32-0.

Fellow Knights forward Cory Paterson inspired a Lakes revival in the second half when he combined well on the left edge with Knights outside back Luke MacDougall.

Paterson scored twice and MacDougall once as Lakes won the second half 24-12.

Tolar was under the watchful eye of Knights assistant coach Trent Robinson in his first match since having surgery to repair a cracked knee cap.

"It wasn't too bad," Tolar said. "It was just good to get a run under my belt and get a bit of confidence in my knee.

"I was just happy to get through the game injury-free.

"We scored a lot of tries in the first half, so I didn't do a lot in defence.

"My knee was feeling fine so I went up to about 35 minutes or so."

Knights prop Tim Natusch did not finish the game after he suffered concussion from a tackle by former Knights player Mick Young.

At Peacock Field, former NSW Country five-eighth Jacob Briggs was sent off for a high tackle on South Newcastle prop Mick O'Shea just before half-time in Macquarie's 34-10 loss to the Lions.

Wyong stole an incredible 32-23 win over Nelson Bay at Tomaree Oval after trailing 23-6 with 10 minutes remaining.

Western Suburbs joined Nelson Bay in fifth place after a thrilling 26-24 win over Kurri Kurri at Harker Oval.

In-form centre Trent Walker scored a treble at Maitland Sportsground on Saturday as Cessnock downed the Pickers 50-10 to remain on top of the ladder.

[PI9016] Nelson Bay's Marvin Filipo and Simon Osborne starred for NSW Country in their 28-24 win over Queensland Rangers at Forster on Saturday.

Wyong's Jamie Davis and Central Charlestown prop Hayden Jeans were also members of the side that turned a 12-6 half-time lead into a thrilling win.

Osborne was scheduled to fly to Brisbane yesterday after being selected to play in the NSW Residents team in the State of Origin curtain-raiser against Queensland Residents on Wednesday.

its easy to sit on a computer and blog comments all day. try the boots and see how you go out there! Bit of constructive criticism never hurt anyone, but in your case " sideline comment", just seems like all you do is Lip off. Have a run!

It would be no surprise to see a resurgent lions side make the top five.

I do have a go. Lakes boys are hard done by, by just bad coaching. It's obvious week in week out, they don't work on their defence the way they should.
