HOOKER Isaac De Gois made a successful return from reconstructive knee surgery in the Central Coast Centurions' 28-18 victory over Canterbury in a NSW Cup game at Bass Hill last night but playmaker Ben Rogers dislocated his elbow and could be sidelined for at least a month.
Utility Marvin Karawana hurt his knee in the same game and he and Rogers, who has been dogged by ankle, foot and knee problems throughout the pre-season, will have scans today to determine the extent of their injuries.
Knights coach Rick Stone was disappointed for Rogers and Karawana but pleased for De Gois, who will now be considered for selection for Newcastle's home opener against NRL and world champions Melbourne at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Saturday night.
Stone said De Gois started the game for the Centurions and played 50 minutes, looking sharp out of dummy-half.
Rogers was injured midway through the second half and it took medical staff several minutes to realign his elbow.
Kiwi Test centre Junior Sau is battling to be fit to tackle the Storm after suffering rib cartilage damage in Newcastle's 20-16 victory over Canterbury at ANZ Stadium last Saturday.
Sau, who scored Newcastle's third try, was replaced after being tackled by Bulldogs skipper Andrew Ryan in the 47th minute.
The 22-year-old powerhouse said after the game that he would miss one match and hoped to return against Manly at Gosford on March 27, but he indicated yesterday that he had improved enough to rate himself a chance of playing against the Storm.
Stone said Adam MacDougall, who missed the Bulldogs game with a knee injury, was a chance of returning against Melbourne but Kurt Gidley (knee) and James McManus (foot) were still a few weeks away from being available.
