NEWCASTLE have declared they would move to re-sign Chris Houston if the former Knights forward was cleared of drug supplying charges.
Houston and ex-teammate Danny Wicks remain before Newcastle Local Court, but the former's case is about to reach a pivotal point.
Houston's barrister Peter Harper is likely to use his next appearance, on September 23, to apply for a committal proceeding before Magistrate Elaine Truscott to put police evidence including telephone intercepts under scrutiny.
Houston would then either be discharged or committed for trial.
The 25-year-old offered his resignation to the Knights in March. He is working as a labourer but continues to train in the hope his name is cleared.
Newcastle chairman Rob Tew said yesterday Houston - who was 18th man for NSW in Origin III last year - could be back on the Knights roster if he was found innocent.
"If he was found not guilty and indeed had no case to answer we would think about getting him back very seriously," Tew said. SMH
