Houston resigns in bid to ease damage

04 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
ALLEGED drugs supplier Chris Houston formally tendered his resignation from the Newcastle Knights late yesterday, saying the embattled NRL club had "taken enough hits".

The 25-year-old back-rower issued a statement through the Knights, urging the club's legions of fans to continue to support the club during their current crisis.

Houston will face Newcastle Local Court on April 13 to face three counts of supplying ecstasy and one count of supplying cocaine after detectives issued his legal representative, barrister Peter Harper, with a court attendance notice on Monday.

"I wish to announce that I am voluntarily terminating my playing contract. I have always had and will continue to have high regard for the Knights club, its supporters and its sponsors," Houston said.

"The Knights have a strict code of conduct which I have always supported. The club has taken enough hits because of these charges. Therefore, I feel obligated to disassociate myself from the club until my matter is resolved.

"I hope by resigning and leaving the Knights that these problems will now leave the club and go with me so that my teammates will now be able to focus completely on the 2010 season without distraction, and that the club will remain strong and united.

"I sincerely hope that all sponsors and supporters remain faithful to this great club and region."

Knights chief executive Steve Burraston said earlier yesterday that the club accepted Houston's resignation.

"I've indicated to Chris that we will accept it," Burraston said.

"We understand that he's got a huge battle to fight now, and his mind just couldn't be around football at that period of time.

"We're confident ourself that we've got the right policies and procedures going forward, that we do have a very strong anti-drug culture in our organisation, and whilst these events have hurt us - there's no question about that - we're confident we'll deal with each of these issues as they come up.

"I think the period of time we're entering into, and court cases are only a few weeks to go, that we're probably getting to some finality to this matter."

My seven year old asked me today if all footballers have to take drugs, because if they have to he doesn't want to ever play. Bravo NRL, Knights and media, bravo. When will this all end? I am starting to believe that it wont until top level rugby league is well and truely dead.

Hate to break it to you then DC but Drugs are a massive society issue aswell as alochol. 10yrs time when your son is 17 and has just lived his high school yrs im sure he will have learned the harsh realitys of life. Its only that the media feed off the rugby League that this is publisiced so frequently. Open your eyes and realise this is going on in all walks of life..

Well said Lave, DC will you be sitting your 7 year old down in front of the TV and buck passing for all lessons in life or actually do some parenting and explaining yourself. Footballers arent your kids parents and clearly not role models!

Moral hazzard: rewarding bad behaviour to guarantee it happens again. Keep up the good work sponsors.

Give the players half their pay, make them work 2 days a week and limit training to 3 days per week. I've taught a number of these kids and they change immensly once taken on full time by the knights. Far too many ex players with that ingrained attitude that whatever they do will be ok. Get rid of the ex players from the admin positions at the club and put in place people with educations and business minds. As far as role models, I've told my kids that they are already smarter than everyone in a Knights jersey, coaches included, so little chance them looking to these muppets for any form of guidance.
