Knights offer to lend Timana Tahu an ear

07 Dec, 2010 12:00 AM
THE Knights have offered troubled dual international Timana Tahu their support but not a lifeline to rejoin the club and resume his NRL career.

Tahu, who recently agreed to terms on a new deal with Parramatta reportedly worth $300,000 for next year, is understood to have parted company with the Eels after being absent from training and other club commitments for the past two weeks.

The 30-year-old former NSW and Australian rugby league and rugby union representative’s career remains in limbo amid reports he is trying to resolve personal issues, and it has been reported his wife Kasey and three children are living in Newcastle to be closer to her family.

Knights chief executive Steve Burraston, who coached Tahu in Newcastle’s lower-grade teams earlier in his career, offered to help the 2001 premiership-winner ‘‘in any way we can’’.

‘‘Some time ago I left a couple of messages for him and he hasn’t returned those calls. That was out of concern to make sure he was OK, so I haven’t spoken to him for a while,’’ Burraston said.

‘‘We certainly value him. He’s one of our juniors and spent a lot of time at the club but right at this time, as far as we’re concerned, he’s still contracted to Parramatta and we probably wouldn’t have any room for him anyhow.

‘‘I would be happy to help him in any way we can. I consider him a friend . . . so if ‘T’ needs some help, I’m happy to help him personally and offer the club’s support to him as well.’’

Newcastle coach Rick Stone said the Knights spoke to Tahu’s manager, Warwick Wright, earlier this year but made a decision to pursue other options.

Stone said the Knights had little room left under their salary cap and, with the likes of Adam MacDougall, Junior Sa’u, Aku Uate, James McManus, Wes Naiqama, Keith Lulia and Junior Kiwis international Siuatonga Likiliki already on their books, were in the market for a front-row forward rather than another outside back.

‘‘We contacted Timana’s manager a few months ago but we didn’t get too much out of that and from there we moved on and made other decisions,’’ Stone said.

‘‘Signing Adam MacDougall was obviously one late in the year, and there were a few other decisions a little bit earlier like signing Likiliki.

‘‘If anything, we’re on the lookout for a possible forward – preferably a front-rower – and that’s probably the only space we have at the moment.’’

Over-rated drama queen that played his best footy when he was with the Knights before he took off to Parramatta then jumped codes only to return and not be very impressive at all. No Thanks!

Toughen up I spent 4 years living away from my family due to work because we new that was the best thing for the family. We are reaping the benefits now and look back at those times and say that it really helped the family in more ways than financially. So don't walk away as you will regret it in years to come and be bitter about it.

Timana, come and work my 60hours a week, pass your wife and kids each morning at the front door as you get home and then you tell me who should be whinging! ...Toughen up!!

As good as he is (or was..) i just don't think its a smart move.. where ever Tahu has gone - at all levels of this game, and all levels of rugby.. there's been headaches, drama's, problems and tears..

for the money he'd be chasing, Knights would be best to invest in some younger talent with their best days ahead of them, rather then risk putting a sook like Tahu in the team who turns his back at the first sign of a problem, and quite frankly, who has 1 more half decent season ahead..

he's ditched us before, he's had a run in with the Knights best ever player when joey was coaching the origin, so really - what do we owe this bloke????

nothing.

We are again seeing the desperation of Newcastle Knights CEO Burraston. Any player who has come off contract in the past 2 years has been spoken to by the Knights. Just how many came though? Tahu is a BIG SOOK who wants to just snap his fingers while others will jump to his wishes. Grow up mate & get real. BJ said it all.

good one steeler.

what do we owe him? he made a drama and blew everything out of proportion with joey.. then later he did the same thing to someone....

Timana Tahu might be a sook to some, but is a dual international via rugby league & rugby union and has played in grand finals within all teams he played with (knights / Parramatta). @ Aubrey, if someone called you a brainless twit, would you be offended that? Real world Aubrey, Joey admitted his guilt to what was said.
