Rosellas unite for last-minute victory

30 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
WESTERN Suburbs yesterday dispelled rumours of disunity by launching a grandstand finish to beat Wyong 24-22 with 34 seconds remaining at Harker Oval in their Newcastle Rugby League qualifying semi-final.

The Roos looked to have clinched the see-sawing contest when five-eighth Chad Sharp cut through to score for a 20-16 lead in the 73rd minute. But the Rosellas refused to die.

In the final minute they shifted left to centre David Pangai, and using the most potent sidestep in the competition, he beat Wes Tillott to score the match-winner.

Pangai's try capped a high-intensity match where the lead changed on five occasions and three times in the final 12 minutes.

In recent weeks speculation has been rife about problems in the Wests camp.

But lock Sean Rudder said yesterday's fightback and jubilant celebration of Pangai's try was proof the Rosellas were committed to winning the premiership.

"There hasn't been problems, but obviously when you're not going as well as you want to be going there's always going to be a little bit of disunity, but as you see, as soon as the team is going well again everyone is in there cuddling," he said.

Wests showed a massive improvement in defence from their 26-point loss to Maitland two week ago, withstanding a wave of Wyong attack in the first half.

"We did a lot of work on our defence this week because we were so loose in the last month and we said we've got to get off the line and work together," Rudder said.

Many considered Wyong premiership favourites before the game, but now they must beat Cessnock to keep their title defence alive.

Roos hooker Mitch Williams said it was a gut-wrenching way to lose a semi-final.

"It's just one more tackle and we go through and they don't, but that's footy," Williams said.

"We've been close every time we've played and we've drawn, but in the end they just got on top.

"I think they keep getting us in 10-minute lapses."

Wyong scored first when centre Jamie Davis hit a hole at pace.

Wests then held up Roos back-rower Bodie O'Connell twice and forced him to knock the ball on over the line once as Wyong controlled possession.

Five-eighth Todd Maddison provided a deft pass for Brock Harmer to get Wests on the board, before Davis scored his second try to give Wyong a 10-6 lead.

A Todd Hurrell penalty in the 40th minute reduced the margin to 10-8 at the break.

Davis snared his hat-trick after half-time but possession then turned in favour of Wests and tries to wingers Ryan Lamb and Steve Gordon levelled the score at 16-all.

A knock-on from Josh Mantellato from a bomb gave Murray Parker a try and Wests the lead at 20-16 to provide a thrilling final 10 minutes.

Cessnock coach Todd Edwards is confident skipper Ryan Gregory will return from a broken hand for their minor semi-final against Wyong on Saturday.

Cessnock progressed after beating Kurri Kurri 36-16 in front of more than 3000 people at Cessnock Sportsground on Saturday.

Sunday's major semi-final will be at Maitland Sportsground between the Pickers and Wests.

Cracker of a game, worthy of a grand final. Good luck to West but we'll take revenge in two weeks after we put Cessnock to the sword and the Pickers towel you up next week. Well done to the young referee who I thought controlled the game game admirably, especially after last year's grand final where this paper unfairly roasted him for weeks. Hope you get the big one again.
