THE Port Stephens Sharks have unveiled their logo and new signings as they attempt to rise from the ashes of the Northern Blues.
The Newcastle Rugby League’s newest club will host a trial next Friday night at Tomaree Sports Complex, which will include a game against the Knights under 20s.
An extended Newcastle representative squad will take on the Knights’ NSW Cup side in the second match.
The Sharks jerseys will resemble the 1970s Cronulla-Sutherland strip of black, sky blue and white to represent the Northern Blues and Raymond Terrace Magpies.
Next week’s trial will probably mark the debut of Sharks English duo David and Simon Wilson.
The brothers have played for English Super League club Hull Kingston Rovers, whose new coach is former Knights assistant Craig Sandercock.
David will play prop and Simon is a utility back.
New Zealand Warriors Toyota Cup premiership winners Anthony Lama (prop) and George Maka (fullback) will arrive tomorrow to further strengthen the side, as well as former South Sydney NSW Cup forward John Tupou.
Port Stephens captain-coach James McCabe has brought back Blues 2006 grand finalists Trent Green and Matt Latham and is in talks with former halfback Brent Mulholland and centre Jimmy Slater, a cousin of Melbourne Storm star Billy Slater.
‘‘I’m good mates with Brent and he’s still weighing up with his work as he works long hours and probably can’t make it to training,’’ McCabe said.
‘‘There’s a couple of young kids who will handle it in the halves. Trent Green will be really good for us as he’s played a lot of division football on the far north coast and he’s been great at training.’’
Green is expected to play a pivotal role after the loss of representative halfback Dane Queenan to South Newcastle.
‘‘It depends on who we pick up, but if we pick up Brent then Trent he will definitely play six, and if not, Trent will probably play seven,’’ McCabe said.
Another outside back and a half is still on McCabe’s wish list, but the rookie coach is confident the Sharks will improve on the Blues’ wooden spoon last season starting with next week’s trial.
‘‘I think we’re going to do quite well. We’ll surprise a few teams,’’ he said.
‘‘For us it’s just about getting some time in the guys’ legs and playing some footy as it’s going to be a whole new team. None of the guys have played together bar five or six from last year’s Bay side.
‘‘A few guys from Raymond Terrace have come over, which is good to see if they can handle first grade.’’
