Uate on board in PM's XIII triumph

27 Sep, 2010 04:00 AM
NEWCASTLE'S Dally M winger of the year Aku Uate continued his charmed run at Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby by scoring a try in the Australian Prime Minister's XIII's 30-18 victory over Papua New Guinea yesterday.

The NRL's top try-scorer crossed for a brace in each of Fiji's Pacific Cup Tests against Cook Islands and Tonga at the same ground last year, then took his tally to five tries in three matches when he charged over from dummy half early in the second half of yesterday's game.

Parramatta back-rower Ben Smith's try gave the visitors a 4-0 half-time lead, then Cronulla prop Luke Douglas scored shortly after the break and Uate followed a few minutes later to stretch the margin to 14-0.

It was the 22-year-old game-breaker's first senior appearance in a green-and-gold jersey and could be a sign of things to come.

He is expected to be included in Australia's Four Nations squad, if the Rugby League International Federation accepts his application to change his international representative status from Fijian to Australian.

"Aku played really well and looked right at home in a rep jersey, playing at that level," Australian Rugby League media manager Brad Preston said.

"He ran out of dummy half and beat two or three defenders to score a try under the posts."

Cronulla and former Knights front-rower Kade Snowden celebrated his first appearance in the Prime Minister's XIII by scoring under the posts late in the game.

The Kumuls used the match as a warm-up for their Four Nations campaign against Australia, New Zealand and England, to be played in Australia and New Zealand in October and November.
