Coleman philosophical after Beaches land their man

11 Jan, 2012 03:33 PM
HAMILTON coach Scott Coleman admitted the loss of two-time Anderson Medal winner Va Talaileva to Southern Beaches had cut deep but understood the reasons behind the departure of the bruising No.8.

Talaileva confirmed yesterday he had joined Southern Beaches after the ambitious Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union club had secured him a lucrative job in the mines.

Former representative players, prop Erik Lolohea and second-rower Mark O’Brien, have also defected to Cahill Oval from Hamilton.

Talaileva has been the heart and soul of the Hawks since joining the club in 2007.

He was instrumental in securing the 2008 and 2010 premierships and had been employed by a Hawks sponsor.

‘‘It is a massive loss,’’ Coleman said.

‘‘The club has done a lot for him and his family, but at the end of the day, [providing for his] family comes first and we understand that. We wish him all the best if that is the type of job they can offer.’’

Southern Beaches, who recruited Newcastle representative hooker Charl van Niekirk from the Hawks a year ago, made the finals for first time last season under coach Tim Chidgey.

They finished third before losing to Wanderers in the minor semi-final.

‘‘It shows that Southern Beaches mean business,’’ Coleman said.

‘‘They have chased Va for two years and have finally got their man. Erik didn’t play last year and Mobby [O’Brien] mainly played second grade, so they won’t be as hard to cover.’’

The Hawks start pre-season training on January 17 and meet University in the first round on April 14.

The season draw was released yesterday and did not include Easts, who have taken action against the NHRU in the Supreme Court for their reinstatement to Premier Rugby.

The court has ordered the two bodies to mediation, which must be completed by February 13, four days before the next court appearance.

‘‘We are waiting for the court registrar to notify us about a mediation date,’’ NHRU general manager Fenton Coull said.

Coull confirmed that Easts had their application to compete in Premier Rugby next season knocked back.

‘‘They have been offered a position in A, B or C grade and given until January 17 to reply,’’ he said.

Bye bye Hawks for season 2012. The Hawks will be in a fight for the wooden spoon with their feeder club Lake Macquarie this year. Good to see that East are a chance to get back this year, good luck !

Bahahahahah, the east hawk roos are no chance this year without Va. Looks like another undefeated green wash will occur again this year. Tipping all green grades to be minor/major premiers. Go the mighty greens.

Are Beaches the new Waratah? How the NHRU has changed, we have gone from fridges and carpets to mining coal? Keep the fight going Easts, will be great to see you guys back where you should be, in premier rugby!

One has to ask how and why jobs are being offered in coal mines to potential Beaches players. Large companies have transparent recruitment policies and highly paid jobs like this shouldn't be given away. As for the Easts situation one has to wonder whether there could potentially be an injunction put on the start of the competition until these court proceedings are completed. A comment from an Easts spokesperson on the situation is also warranted to get both takes on the story.

Slimed Again, you are obviously a Hawk or Poon supporter stirring the pot. The real faithful know those comments are way over the top. We will be thereabouts but nowhere as strong as last year.

Beach Boy where are you ??

You said you weren't going to chop your mutton chop hairdo until the Beaches won the premiership 2 yrs ago.. Your been row, row, rowing that boat down the stream for a while now....

It takes more than one person to change that picture. 4th- 5th is my prediction.

James, Are you going to interview the Hawks players who have left to see if there are other things behind this story? So far all we have seen is Scott's comments.

Getting jobs for players is nothing new and has been going on for decades. That's what's great about the rugby network.
