MEREWETHER coach Tony Munro admitted yesterday that the Greens had forgotten what it was like to lose.
The Greens breezed through the opening 15 rounds of the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union.
But successive losses to Hamilton (35-17) and University (19-18) in round 16 and 17 brought the high-flyers back to earth.
Despite the defeats, they had enough points in the tank to take the minor premiership in a canter.
Munro is confident they have learnt from their mistakes and will enter the major semi-final against Hamilton at Townson Oval today with a new attitude.
The winner will go straight to the grand final and the loser will play the winner of the minor semi-final between Wanderers and Maitland.
"We had a nice run of 15 wins on the trot but the boys realise it's what happens in September that matters," Munro said.
"We hadn't been beaten for a while and I think we forgot what it was like.
"To go down to Hamilton and end our winning streak and lose the Hawthorne Cup hurt but the better lesson for us was the Uni loss.
"Since then we have mixed our lineout up a bit and have worked on a few patterns we hope to roll out tomorrow."
The Greens will be at full strength, barring winger Daniel Spiteri (broken hand).
"It's always nice to get close to your No.1 team on the park for the semi-finals," Munro said.
"We moved guys around and experimented with a few things for a couple of weeks but we will go back to what we do best tomorrow."
Much of that will revolve around the attacking brilliance of fullback Blake Creighton and outside centre Jayson Strachan.
After missing much of the season, the game breakers are close to peak fitness.
"They have taken a little while but they showed what they are capable of in the last game against Lake Macquarie," Munro said.
Hamilton enforcer Va Talaileva is in doubt with a neck injury but Munro expects him to play.
"He is a tough unit," he said.
"When we went through our game plan on Tuesday he was on the list of danger men.
"They are strong right across the park. Damien Wells is probably the X-factor.
"He has been a bit subdued of late but we expect him to cut loose."
Hamilton starved the Greens of possession in their round 15 win.
They committed players at the breakdown and when they did not turn over possession they slowed it down sufficiently to get their defensive line set.
Talaileva is central to those tactics and Coleman will not make a decision on the inspirational Samoan until this morning.
