Star Newcastle Jets attract interest of rivals

Star Newcastle Jets attract interest of rivals

3/09/2008 11:01:00 PM
JETS chief executive John Tsatsimas said yesterday that he was "pretty certain" that new A-League franchises Gold Coast United and North Queensland FC were circling a host of high-profile Jets who are free agents at season's end.

Jets skipper Jade North, star twins Joel and Adam Griffiths and goalkeeper Ante Covic are all coming off contract, but rival A-League clubs are not officially permitted to approach them until January 1.

There is speculation, however, that Joel Griffiths, last season's A-League player of the year and leading goalscorer, has already attracted expressions of interest from Gold Coast and North Queensland.

Tsatsimas said the Jets were realistic enough to accept that the Socceroos quartet would be targets for rival clubs, especially the new franchises, who are effectively starting with a blank cheque book.

"They've got a date and they can't tap up players beforehand, but it is common knowledge that they do," Tsatsimas said yesterday.

"I'm pretty certain that's happened, and we're not oblivious to that.

"That's not to say that other clubs would have done it either. But there's no concern about that."

Joel Griffiths said he did not want to discuss his contractual situation yesterday, other than to confirm there had been no progress from when he first met with Jets management almost a month ago.

"If it's meant to be, it's meant to be," Griffiths said.

"I'm just trying to stay positive and concentrate on playing."

Gold Coast coach Miron Bleiberg said yesterday that he would be interested in talking to each and all of Newcastle's big four but had no intention of breaching the anti-tampering regulations.

"I am very sensitive about the issue of approaching them, because I don't think that would be fair to Newcastle," Bleiberg said.

"So, if you are asking have I approached them, the answer is no.

"But if they are free agents by the time their contracts expire, I will be happy to talk to all four of them."

Bleiberg called on Football Federation Australia to reduce the waiting period before his club can start negotiations.

The Jets have held preliminary talks with Joel Griffiths and Covic, but both were disappointed with the initial offers.

Newcastle have yet to start negotiations with Adam Griffiths, and North appears intent on heading overseas.

Meanwhile, Joel Griffiths volunteered an apology yesterday to travelling Jets fans for not acknowledging them after Newcastle's 5-0 thrashing by Melbourne at Telstra Dome last Friday.

"In hindsight, we should have showed our appreciation because we had some loyal fans travel to Melbourne to support us," he said.

"I think we only had a couple of players go over and acknowledge them.

"I suppose we were all disappointed with the score and a bit embarrassed. But we didn't mean to offend anyone, and hopefully our fans stick with us, because we need them."

Mr Dillon loves doing the big negative Jets stories, doesn't he ? ALL A-League players coming off contract are being courted by the new clubs, not just Jets players. It's called the transfer market ... don't make it a bigger thing than it is. I think we are well aware now that these guys come off contract at the end of the season.

I'd be amazed if any of them are at the Jets next year. Given Con's reluctance to use service contracts to subsidise players' wages, it's no surprise they move to greener pastures.

Cho. Clearly service contracts are a disgrace and are implemented to suit Sydney and Melbourne. Con's stance on this and other issues ie transfers, clearly shows management have strong principles and are willing to stick by them. You'd imagine we'd come last every year not using them, yet are the highest-performing club over the three seasons (making the finals every year and winning the premiership). Criticism of Con's tactics is quite pathetic!

Highest performing club. LOL. Win the League title then maybe. Final appearances mean nothing, who remembers who was playing in them two seasons ago. LOL. You even lost the home and away final to the CC Mariners. Had a neutral ground and handballed in the box and got away with it. #Winning one game does not define a season.

Dillon may exaggerate but TBH Con could not run a pish-up at the Brewery. His management tactics are slowly poisoning the goodwill of all our best players. Good luck this season because next season we are going to suffer from these policies.

Until Con gives in and starts using service agreements the Jets are always just going to be a breeding ground for young talent. Soon enough Dutchy will get frustrated at the number of players he's nurtured and watched walk out and he'll follow them!

Dont know what you are basing your comments on LoL. Made the finals every year and won a premiership. Just a reminder that after the handball Aloisi missed an easy header straight in front of goal. So sweet!!!! The Jets have made the finals every year and won a premiership. Only Newcastle and Sydney can say that, hence due to the fact the FC are rubbish we can say the Jets have clearly been the best performing club in the A-League. Boy the CC take heart to the two GF chokes to both their F3 rivals.
