 An extra million trucks

An extra million trucks

31 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
DURING a recent radio interview discussing the infrastructure shortfall in the lower Hunter, it was mentioned that after the planned container terminal is completed on the old BHP steelworks site, up to 1 million extra truck movements a year will need to access the site from the Industrial Highway.

If this is anywhere near the truth, some major off-site planning needs to be done, along with any terminal construction.

I welcome the container terminal to Newcastle - but let's plan it correctly from the beginning.

that equates to 2 trucks a minute, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every week of the year..... i can't see that being real. but if it is....

it's not real. They couldn't load/unlaod them that fast. Someone has misread the brief

Actually the figure is up to 4m trucks per year. Read the report on the Port corp's proposal that is now on public display. Submissions close on the 6th September.

I thought that most containers were coming up by rail, obviously not all as a percentage will travel by road

funny but isnt there another election coming up ? the site has been largely vacant for years and now they want to develop the area as a container terminal ?? mmmmm pork barrelling again ? the site should have been a container terminal years ago with the roads and rail upgraded to compliment Newcastles facilities...

bigbox ,,,,, only about 20% will be by rail. The report says that and sets the rail limit to avoid spending money on rail infrastructure.

Get ready Newcastle for more trucks. Lake coal is planning peak movements of 540 per day in there mine expansion to 1.2million tonnes and Kores as north Wyong are planning for a 5 million tpa mine and if they can't get the rail line to take there coal it will go by truck and if the rail line is a goer just imagine all these coal trains blocking Adamstown crossing. Which ever way Newcastle losses
