THERE is a growing menace threatening Newcastle and its suburbs. This menace is the leaf blower. Useful only as a means of extinguishing grass fires, the blower is being used as a replacement for the broom and a very poor replacement it is, being 20 times as loud and much less efficient.
Instead of sweeping grass cuttings into a tidy pile, it blows them in every direction, as well as putting a cloud of fine particles into the air to worry asthma sufferers.
The blower is a severe source of noise pollution, as well as fine particle pollution, and should not be used in the vicinity of people.
