 It’s city v country again

It’s city v country again

THE railway is a suburban and regional issue and cannot be subject to the whims of people wealthy enough to live in inner Newcastle. Residents of greater Newcastle, the Hunter and Lake Macquarie don’t care if they have to travel by train, tram or wagon pulled by a team of horses – as long as they are not disgorged onto the footpath at the edge of town. At Wickham.

They are happy to compromise on speed and the number of crossings, as long as they can conveniently reach our city, our entertainment venues and our fabulous beaches.

I am disgusted at the suggestion that MPs Sonia Hornery and Matthew Morris have sat back and let the city go to pot. On the contrary, these two, plus their colleagues further up the valley, have been tireless in pressing for the kind of public transport we need. Out here, it is Jodi McKay who is regarded as the sad joke, while I know a lot of people who would walk over hot coals for our hard-working representatives. This whole debacle is inner-city types ignoring the greater needs of the region.

Hey Geoff, which train do you take to the city from Maryland?

Horse He didnt say he did catch a train. I guess he has family they may even use the train from Maitland etc. Its just a pitty that we dont have the Belmont line as well as that would of been good and cut down some of the traffic. Maybe one could go to Nelson Bay and Raymond Terrace. Williamtown. They are an easy form of transport and MORE direct. Buses have a limit of how many wheel chairs and prams they can take. Why should people at the Top of Newcastle have to get a bus (to travel that short distance to get home) from Wickham .

Think you missed the point altogether Horse. Spending $100's of million to cut a train line in Newcastle doesn't fix any of the transport problems in the wider region. Residents of the Mayland / Fletcher corridor, like Geoff, are stuck with the completely inadequate Route 260 bus service. It reels from side to side of Minmi Rd like a drunken sailor in a typhoon, doubling back on itself & travelling over twice the distance of the most direct route before terminating at the Bunn St Interchange at Wallsend. From there they have to wait for another low frequency bus service to travel elsewhere, plus pay another fare for the privilage. And if they need to go to say Cardiff, well its a trip to the Gledale Interchange & wait to transfer to another bus. Or another Interchange a Cardiff to the train. Mmmm seems like a lot of 'Interchange' already exists in the Hunter. Funny how those who want to cut the train in Newcastle base it in creating an 'interchange' as a 'solution' to to low transport use, but never provide an analysis of how the current system which heavily based around 'interchange' is failing.

Yeah keep it to Wickham station, then cut the line, replace something ugly with some thing beautiful, attractive and useful that will actually make it worthwhile going to the CBD.

edteech is totally correct. Can I put it another way. If you rent a car you drive it to your destination. You do not just drive it to the next car hire depot and get another to the next depot and so on. You would think that rediculous! We why do it with a train?

The rail line is on the wrong alignment and as a result it will remain inefficient and a hinderance to the city moving ahead. I am not against the rail concept but it needs to serve the people of greater Newcastle and at the moment it seems it would take an engineering miricle something no government in this country has stomach for to achieve an effective public transport system with a rail core. This mean we need to look for a more innovative solution to our public transport needs and as long as those invested in the rail debate on both side remained blinkered to the greater issue of reliable mass transport system for the lower hunter region as a whole with fast convienient links to other regions than this issue will continue to stagnate and fester. Forget the railway think outside the box and help identify a real solution than arguing about the pros and cons of the two clearly failed systems ( Rail & Road)
