 Recycling, at the kerb

Recycling, at the kerb

24 Jan, 2012 07:18 AM
WE had a good recycling program here in Newcastle, where twice a year those with waste would put it out and those in need would take it away. I would say that at least 50per cent of this waste was recycled thus. Now Newcastle City Council has decided to cease this program, which will mean more waste going to the dump.

Surely this is madness. Many will find it easier to take it out to the bush and dump it. How many families that are battling have furnished their homes through the kerbside waste program? I suppose the charities will be getting more dumped at their bins as well. We received a flyer in the mail box telling us that the collection is now stopped and the council will let us know more about it next month. What next?

A similar thing happened when I was living in The Hills Shire in Sydney. They now have a program where you simply ring them and they come out and do a collection instead of the former biannual collection. Hope NCC does the same.

This letter is incorrect. Read the information, mate. It clearly says it is changing, not stopping.

The kerbside waste collection is changing and has temporarally stopped untill further details are worked out.

Now I don't know what the new system will be. It maybe what Maitland does and gives one or two free passes to the tip to dump your rubbish. Or it could be an on-call service. Let's just wait and see before jumping to conclusions.

Rates up, fewer services. Thanks for nothing, council.

Well said, Les. The question is: why have this 3 bin system in the first place?

Council will now say they have a just cause for a rate increase for the extra services on a weekly basis.

Personally, I find the green waste bin to be a big fail. It's a bug-breeding bin from Hell!

From what I understand everyone will still get two pick ups but, rather than dump stuff on the lawn, people can call up and book the collection. If not, people can also request a voucher so they can take there stuff to the tip. Seems sensible and, if anything, is a better service as you will not have huge piles of rubbish destroying the look of streets for weeks.

Round where I live people often just put things out on the footpath and they are usually gone within a few hours at most. So you can still get rid of stuff this way and if its not gone by night bring it back in so the suburb doesn't look like a dump. Easy.

So the idea, Oscar, of the green waste bin is to take garden trimmings/clippings to the dump to make garden mulch, which is available at very reasonable prices. The recycling bin is provided to stop so much waste going into general waste areas. Both these services provide additional jobs to our community.

I am still waiting on the green lid for my green bin, because city workers kept moving my bin off the road, now I have a bin full of green waste the council will not pick up. Contacted the council, told to leave it out and a driver will change the lid, the bin is now full of rubbish courtesy of passers by! Left it out for three weeks, still no lid.

@ Stixey - I've got my own garden mulch, it's free !

A rate rise for increase services contracted out of councils hands is a sure thing.

I think there is more priorities in Newcastle than an extra bin service that not all people/ ratepayers use.

Ya better keep that secret in the bin aye !
