 SES rightly stormy

SES rightly stormy

04 Mar, 2010 08:35 AM
I'M sorry to be one who throws a shadow over the success of the state Surf Life Saving Championships at Blacksmiths during the past weekend. I'm a great admirer of the surf lifesaving movement and make my modest financial contribution as required. I will continue to do so. However it's absolutely unforgivable that the organisers ignored the tsunami warning on Sunday.

The SES is fully justified in making adverse comments about the failure of the SLSA to cease beach activities. What sort of an example is this? I wonder what would have happened in Queensland where the SLSA has a formal agreement with the SES to work together in times of emergency.

Next time the beach is "closed" should we all ignore the warning? Should we place the lives of surf lifesavers in jeopardy? It appears the SLSA has done just that in respect to the SES - and it has set a terrible example in doing so.

Sorry SLSA, you got it wrong.

I think your overdramatising this a little. The Tsunami warning was overkill and you could see that on its way here it was nothing. It was meant to hit Hawii, NZ, Pacific Islands etc before here and there was nothing. It was supposed to hit Australia about 8:30. Nothing. Looking at the Tsunami's path and what was unfolding, a risk assessment would hae been made and the carnival went ahead. I also made the same risk assessment when i went to a closed Bar beach for a swim. (and so did hundreds of other people). This is not a dictatorship and we do have the freedom to think for our selves and conduct our own risk assessments.

I'm just pleased to see they where surf life savers and not life gaurds partisipating in the surf carnival.

No-one ignored the trasunami warning Grahame. It was supposed to be here by 9am at the latest and nothing. So we went for a swim. The SES was totally over the top with its "warning". Those with common sense were in the water swimming that morning.
