I DIDN’T see the Ashley Presbury letter (‘‘Learn the Koori culture’’ 1/2) that Jaye Quinlan refers to (Short takes 3/2) but even if she is not old enough to have been around, Ms Quinlan must have heard of the riot at the Star Hotel. That extremely violent protest, forever commemorated in song, didn’t seem to harm the rights of Novocastrians to determine who should enter their pubs and the circumstances under which they now enter them.
Before and since, Aboriginal Australians have had to protest longer and louder for causes somewhat more pressing. I know which action says the most about culture.
