WHAT were they thinking of back in the 1970s when they built a four-lane bridge over the Hunter River to Stockton, Fern Bay, Williamtown and Nelson Bay? The cost to build it back then would have been way too much for the needs at the time. Even today we don't need a four-lane bridge across the river, do we?
We have only a two-lane bridge at Tourle Street, and I imagine the amount of traffic over it would be at least triple the 1970s volume, especially with the airport's increasing size. Going to the airport from the Industrial Highway there are are three lanes onto Tourle Street, immediately into two lanes, then one lane over the new bridge, then back to two lanes over Stockton Bridge.
At least today we don't have to worry about getting booked for speeding over the new bridge - not when its bumper to bumper going to work.
