 Two items, four prices

Two items, four prices

02 Feb, 2012 04:32 AM
WHEN shopping at Woolworths Kotara recently I noticed prices on two different vegetables showed certain anomalies.

Loose Australian Bartlett pears were selling at $2.98 a kilogram. The same product in one-kilogram packs was selling for $5.48 a pack.

The other item, large flat mushrooms, loose were $10.98 a kilogram. Large flat mushrooms packs, with five or six to a pack, were $6.28 each, giving a price per kilogram of about $16.75.

I think you will find the price differential is due to the convenience factor of prepackaged food. Try doing a price comparison on prepackaged to deli sliced to whole smallgoods, the % is astounding.( $7+ for whole ham, $16+ for deli sliced, and $40+ for prepackaged.)

We lost all choice and face to face service when the small town grocer and corner shop went out of business to the likes of the huge mega shops. Although there are still a few these small business's were the backbone of townships and small comunities.

Gee Bruce, what is your point here? Of course pre-packaged items cost more. Do you think the packaging comes free and the person packing it works for nothing? Why people buy pre-packaged items is beyond me. Those people are either time poor or just lazy. I much prefer to hand pick my fruit and veg as you can bypass the not-so-good ones.

All Aldi Stores prices are uniform; and a lot cheaper than the big two. Reasonable quality also.

The cost of 'packaging'.

Excludes the cost of disposal of packaging which is externalised onto the community & environment

Typical private sector approach supported by neo-liberal economic orthodoxy.

Unfortunately that's the price for prepackaged convenience.

It pays to be a smart shopper and aware of these supermarket tactics.

The same goes for many deli products such as sliced hams and chicken breasts.
