 We’re looking ordinary

We’re looking ordinary

I THINK the people of the Hunter are being dudded by outside forces with more money than sense. A dam that would have provided water security has been knocked on the head. Excess water could have been profitably piped south where it is scarce. The catchment area would have preserved wildlife.

Instead, we get gas exploration, with its dubious history of ‘‘fracking’’ and underground disturbances. Farmland, vineyards and horse studs are being bought out. Instead of selling our wine to China, we let them buy up our assets. The same goes for all that we produce. Coal is king for the moment and what do we get in return? Excuse my French, but rien de rien – meaning nothing at all.

All political parties are in on the act, except possibly the Greens, who lack clout. Australia is for sale to the highest bidder – but it won’t be us who benefits. It will be the multinationals, who don’t give a damn as long as profits keep rolling in and increasing.

Unfortunately, even though the dam proposal had merits it was to the detriment of Hunter Water users, not their benefit. We were being charged to build it & Sydney water users were gaining the benefit, they would have paid lower water usage costs as we had already paid for the dam & the government would have spent Hunter Water profits in Sydney, surprise, surprise.

Hi Jerry, we as well as the rest of the world are hooked on energy. I agree with your sentiments that we will have little to show for it once those resources have been exhausted.whilst big bucks are made by owners the benefits to the workforced have been screwed to below CPI. Governments of the day make plans only to maintain power and not necessarily long term ones that address your concerns. I think an overhaul of both these systems is overdue to put in place some schema that will alllow all to prosper way into the future, but then again pigs will fly.

Tillegra Dam would only have provided water security for new and future North-West Sydney developments, and maybe the Central Coast...

It was never intended as part of the Hunter Valleys own water supply ~ Hunter residents were only meant to be "the bunnies" to pay for it..

And as always, Sydney would have pocketed all profits ~ nothing for our region ~ and lost agricultural production as a bonus.

Some things never change..
