KEY TAKEOUTS

Is it the end for JD. Will the injuries and failed HIAs mean Jason Demetriou gets a stay of execution? South Sydney finished the game with 14 fit troops, so it will be harsh if the coach is shown the door based on the Sharks’ loss. They had a dig, despite losing Cam Murray (concussion), Junior Tatola (ankle) and Tyrone Munro (collarbone) in the first half. Jye Gray and Jacob Host also had HIAs.

Ronnie magic. Thank heavens Ronaldo Mulitalo was never eligible for Queensland. He is close to the best winger in the game. The Cronulla flyer scored two tries and set up Teig Wilton for his own double. He was also responsible for the brutal hit on Jye Gray that forced him to undergo a concussion test.

Tommy terrific. Tom Burgess was South Sydney’s best, and really stepped up as a couple of forwards went down. He bagged a deserved try, and in a fortnight will move into outright second behind John Sutton for most games played at Souths. Not bad for a front-rower. Any fears he would drop his bundle after his older brother Sam Burgess left the club for the north of England have proven off the mark.

Blakye Brailey scores

That’s the game. Cronulla’s Blakye Brailey has scored to seal the win.

There was a small chance Souths were about to pull off a miracle comeback victory.

But they have not. They have been brave. Tom Burgess was excellent. Will it be enough to save Jason Demetriou?

Ronnie Mulitalo was easily the best player on the field.

Tass has scored for Bunnies

Isaiah Tass has scored to give Souths a sniff of a boilover.

There are five minutes remaining and the score is 28-22.

I can’t watch.

Tommy scores

Tom Burgess has a try for Souths.

The Englishman scores too many tries for a front-rower. He supported Saliva Havili who offloaded for Burgess to crash over to the left of the posts.

That’s 28-18.

Surely the Sharkies don’t lose it from here.

Wilton bags a double

Ronnie Mulitalo has helped Teig Wilton to a second try.

He came down with a kick and kept the ball alive for his backrower to score.

Souths were pinged for a forward pass, which allowed the visitors to go on the attack.

Where I am sitting in the press box was directly in line with that pass from Walker to Taane Milne. And guess what? That was not a forward pass.

Cronulla lead 28-12 with just over ten minutes remaining.

Milne scores

Taane Milne has hit back for Souths after some excellent lead-up work by Tom Burgess.

The big Brit steamrolled Jack Williams and got the Bunnies on the front foot.

Milne camped out on the right wing, waited for a pass to dribble along the ground, went to charge into the right corner, baulked, then backed his initial instinct to score.

Dean Hawkins slotted the sideline conversion to make it 22-12.

Katoa scores

The Sharks have kicked further in front with Sione Katoa getting over in the right corner.

Katoa is on par with his mate Ronnie Mulitalo when it comes to finishing tries.

I’m pretty sure they have a wager each year on who finishes with the most tries between them. They set the bar high.

Some Souths fans will be wondering if Katoa should have been in the bin for his shot on Cam Murray just before half-time.

Had he been binned, Souths could have activated their 18th man Jacob Gagai.

Another disruptor

Souths have knocked on from a Cronulla dropout, yet Ronnie Mulitalo was not pulled up for being a ‘disruptor’.

Not once did Ronnie look at the ball.

There’s been no change to the score after 47 minutes.

Murray fails HIA

There are reports Cam Murray’s night is over after failing a HIA.

The Bunnies can not take a trick.

The hit from Sione Katoa looked so innocuous.

The Bunnies are down to 14 men.

Yes, on a night the coach is fighting for his career.

Cheeky Nicho

There was a funny moment late in the first half while the players were standing around as the bunker reviewed a Cronulla captain’s challenge.

Jesse Ramien was penalised for being a ‘disruptor’ when he jumped for a kick and put Jack Wighton off his game.

Disruptor? What a silly name.

Sharks star Nicho Hynes asked referee Ashley Klein why Souths kept getting all the calls, and said: Ï know where they’re sitting on the ladder, sir.”

Klein was having none of it and ran off.
