First of all, my congratulations to the Herald for being part of the solution to this appalling problem of child sex abuse. I saw most of the interview on Lateline with Peter Fox and I congratulate him on getting national movement on this issue.
As a long-standing Catholic worshipper, I have also been very concerned about this issue, as have all the other church-going Catholics I know. Matters in the Hunter came to a head a few years ago, when a number of Catholic priests were convicted. I assumed the problem had been dealt with. Obviously not. I welcome the Royal Commission.
Since the present Catholic hierarchy is now completely discredited, they should all step down, beginning with Cardinal Pell, and stay there, if and until they are exonerated. In the meantime, the national Catholic Church needs an administrator. An administrator need not be Catholic. In fact, it would probably be better if the administrator was not Catholic.
