Newcastle roller derby dames

FIVE of Newcastle’s best roller derby skaters have been selected to train alongside the sport’s best players from America.

Brigid Kelly (Brigand Strong), Ange Stephens (Dangerass), Jillian Mathieson (Godjilla Sold Separately), Carly Tozer (Babycakes), and Susy Pow, who uses her own name, will train in Sydney on November 19 and 20.

The women have been invited to train alongside the LA Derby Dolls and the New York Gotham Girls in a Roller Derby Xtreme training camp featuring a banked track.

Australia’s roller derby teams skate exclusively on a flat track, whereas a banked track, which features in the movie Whip it, is sloped at a 23-degree angle and requires  completely different skills.

‘‘Banked track is a lot faster. They have rules to push you forward, we could reach speeds of 40km/h,’’ Susy Pow said.

The girls have been identified as some of Australia’s best and will be put through their paces in the two-day camp concentrating on skating skills, game play and strategy culminating in a two-hour-long action-packed ‘‘battle for your life’’ bout.

The best skaters from the camp will  represent their local roller derby league as honorary players for  LA Derby Dolls or  New York Gotham Girls in the Roller Derby Xtreme.

Roller Derby Xtreme will tour nationally including Allphones Arena, Sydney, on Wednesday, November 21.
