THE twin-spin attack of Nick Foster and Ben Evans terrorised North Coastal today in Newcastle’s eight-wicket victory at the NSW Country Championships at Miller Field.
Stockton-Raymond Terrace’s Foster took 5-30 with eight overs of off-breaks, including wickets from his first two deliveries.
Charlestown’s teenage leg-spinner Evans provided the Seagulls skipper with strong support by taking 3-5 off 4.2 overs to roll the visitors for 71 in 29 overs.
‘‘It was a little bit doughy but they just bowled really well,’’ Newcastle co-coach Garry Pinches said.
In reply veteran NSW Country batsman Simon Moore helped chase down the total in 13 overs.
Moore was caught on the boundary for 48 with two runs remaining.
Newcastle sent in North Coastal on a damp wicket at Belmont and only North Coastal opener Jayden Hoare (20) was able to make a start against the constant pressure from the bowlers.
Newcastle seamers Josh Bennett (1-12 off six overs) and Jace Lawson (1-7 off five overs) were the other wicket-takers.
The only negative for Newcastle was a hip flexor injury to Josh Trappel suffered while fielding.
The Hamilton-Wickham batsman has been ruled out of tomorrow’s final match against Central Northern and has been replaced by Stockton wicketkeeper batsman Jeff Goninan.
In the other match Central Coast (1-108) thumped Central Northern (9-107) at Cahill Oval thanks to an unbeaten 53 from opening batsman Stuart Lockyer.
