ALMOST 800 people dressed in bright red Santa suits and white shaggy beards ran, walked and skipped their way between Wickham and Newcastle yesterday.
The Santas braved hot conditions to don their suits and help raise funds for children’s charity Variety.
All proceeds went towards that organisation, which provides assistance to sick and disadvantaged children through equipment and programs.
Head of partnership and community Peter Harvey said the fun run just kept growing every year.
‘‘We had just under 800 Santas, which is two-and-a-half times more than last year,’’ he said.
‘‘It looks like we probably topped $16,000 for the kids too.
‘‘There were families that travelled long distances to come and show their support, some from as far as the Hunter Valley and west Lake Macquarie.’’
The fun run is a nationwide annual fund-raiser that aims to bring early Christmas cheer to children and their families. Last year more than 6000 Santas took part across the country.
