HUNTER bookstore owners Max and Amanda Shirley survived the advent of eBooks and iBooks to be crowned the most successful regional operators in Australia.
The husband-and-wife team own and operate MacLean’s Booksellers at Beaumont Street in Hamilton and The Boulevarde, Toronto.
Last week they were crowned winners of the Regional Booksellers of the Year at the Australian independent booksellers conference in Melbourne.
The annual conference is conducted by Leading Edge Books and Mr Shirley said the emergence of online books had not affected his business as significantly as he first thought.
‘‘I think when Angus& Robertson and Borders went under there were issues with that company,’’ he said.
‘‘But it certainly gave the industry a bit of a shake-up and perhaps put other players in the game in a stronger position. I still think a lot of people prefer to read books in hard copies and sales in our children’s section have been as strong as ever.’’
The winners are judged by publishers and general feedback.
