I FIND it absolutely ludicrous that despite consistently long waiting lists for medical services in NSW and lengthy waiting times in our state’s emergency departments, NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner still refuses to acknowledge the genuine need for more doctors in our hospitals.
How much longer do we need to sit in the John Hunter waiting room before the government wakes up and realises cutting health spending won’t fix anything?
Her refusal to provide internship places to 46 graduating medical students of Australian universities in NSW (the state with the most graduates) is testament to her inability to see the big picture.
She claims we don’t need these new doctors but the evidence says otherwise. Bulahdelah recently reported having no GP – we can’t afford to let any of our graduating doctors go.
Rural return-of-service agreements for graduating doctors is one of the many options the government is yet to consider on this issue and could ensure an even distribution of doctors throughout our communities.
