More than 1400 students showed their respect for the Hunter’s diggers this morning at the Combined Schools Anzac Service.

Droves of students filled the Civic Theatre for a ceremony involving dramatic performances to honour the sacrifice of the country’s fighting men and women.

This year marked the 58th Combined Schools service for Newcastle’s Catholic, independent and public school students.

The event is held early as Anzac Day falls in the school holidays.

Lord Mayor John Tate said that commemorating the country’s soldiers was among his favourite events of the year.

He urged the students to attend services on Anzac Day as he congratulated those who organised the ceremony yesterday.

‘‘This is one of the special events in the area,’’ Mr Tate said.

‘‘It’s something I treasure as we move into the Anzac period.’’
