Newcastle football in a post-Jets world

DON’T panic – you’ll have a team to back next season. They just won’t be in the A-League.

Hear us out.

Introducing The Miner League, not to be confused with the NRL (National Resources League).

Here’s how the first season will work.

¦ Two teams.

The Newcastle Goal-Loaders and the Gold Coast Somethings (they can’t be called the Giants, Seagulls, Chargers, Titans or United).

They’ll play each other every week. It might sound dull, but at least Central Coast won’t be there.

¦ Players flown in and out each round on 90-minute contracts. Locked scores at the end of that period will be broken by way of a weigh-in between club owners.

¦ Competition to be expanded in season two to include Charleville-based franchise the Rio Tinto Red-bellied Black Snakes, the Camberwell Cobras, the Fortescue Metals Green Tree Frogs (Port Hedland), and the BHP Bull Ants, based at the uranium-rich Olympic Dam in South Australia.

¦ The top two teams at the end of the season play for the Freedom of Speech Cup.

Hope that’s enough to soothe your worries, for now.
