VEGAS lights and summer brights hit catwalks in Newcastle City Hall last night in a showcase of the region’s fashion talents.
Hunter TAFE fashion design students put their year’s labours on display as part of the NewGen event, the culmination of their year-long studies and work creating collections from scratch.
Citrus-themed garments and swimwear evoking nature and the future designed by certificate three, certificate four and diploma students were included.
Hunter TAFE School of Fashion head teacher Rose Brown said the high calibre of talent and skill on show often surprised onlookers.
‘‘We have a design brief that the students all work to and then you end up with 60 very individual garments,’’ she said.
Diploma student Alexandra Cosgrove said she enjoyed displaying her collection’s mix of downtown Las Vegas and summer florals.
‘‘It’s been challenging but it’s been a really good experience,’’ she said.
The aspiring fashion buyer said she was relieved to complete her works but planned further TAFE study in the industry.
