An untimely burden

FROM what Scott Alder has said (‘‘Cancel Telstra and get a mobile’’ Letters 28/4), it appears Telstra is moving quickly to achieve the goal it set many years ago when it wanted to introduce timed local telephone calls.

Fortunately we have so far been able to resist an impost that other countries are burdened with.

But if, as Scott suggests, Telstra is failing to repair line faults for fixed phones, we will be forced into timed calls by having to use the mobile network.

For the many pensioners who don’t have mobiles this will be of great concern.
