BIONIC limb expert Chard Oldfield kept his reality television win a secret from his Newcastle family for four months before the episode finally aired this week.
Oldfield finished filming the pre-taped reality show Beauty and the Geek in August but has not been able to tell his doctor parents, two older brothers or younger sister.
"I'd just divert the conversation if the show came up," Oldfield said.
The 22-year-old is the fourth major reality television winner from the Hunter this year.
Former Hunter Jaegers netballer Lara Welham and Newcastle footballer Brad Cranfield took home $600,000 for winning The Block in July.
Just weeks later apprentice electrician Andy Allen claimed the MasterChef title, $100,000 and a book deal.
Oldfield's loot, for winning series four of Beauty and the Geek, was $50,000 and a Holden Barina.
The lad from Whitebridge will put his prize money towards finishing his masters in biomedical engineering at the University of NSW in Sydney.
He also plans to buy a harness and shoes for rockclimbing - a sport he discovered on the show.
"The show gave me a bit more courage and confidence. I'm a fan of my new look and I found the whole experience amazing," he said.
Since finishing the show he has also found love with girlfriend Holly, who he meet in a Sydney club about two months ago.
The latest series of Beauty and the Geek achieved solid ratings for Prime7. The grand final came sixth in the Newcastle television ratings on Thursday night with an average of 38,000 viewers.
NBN television took out the top four places with news programs and Getaway.
Prime7's Today Tonight rounded out the top five.
