ENGINEER Kenneth Moss became the sixth chancellor of the University of Newcastle when he started his new role today.
Mr Moss, who is a doctor of philosophy in mechanical engineering, replaced Professor Trevor Waring who had been the university's chancellor for eight years.
Managing director of global maritime company Howard Smith Ltd in his working life, Dr Moss was a foundation board member of the Hunter Medical Research Institute.
He was also chairman of building materials supplier Boral, Centennial Coal and development company The GPT Group and said he was honoured to be appointed chancellor.
‘‘I am looking forward to working with my colleagues in the university and on council, and representing this great university in the community,’’ Dr Moss said.
