School bus, students involved in accidents

A WOMAN was in a critical condition and two boys in a serious condition following separate incidents involving Lake Macquarie schoolchildren yesterday.

A bus carrying schoolchildren was involved in a collision with a car on The Esplanade at Speers Point about 2.45pm.

The female driver of the car had to be cut out of the wreckage. She was taken to John Hunter Hospital with critical injuries to her head and an arm.

An ambulance spokeswoman said none of the schoolchildren on the bus needed treatment.

About an hour later, two boys leaving Whitebridge High School were struck by a four-wheel-drive vehicle on Waran Road.

The ambulance spokeswoman said the boys, aged 13 and 12, were taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.

The older boy suffered a head injury and multiple abrasions while the 12-year-old was being treated for neck and chest pain.
