Friendship and fitness has kept the Merewether Mackerels going for 40 years, but Alf Carpenter reckons being a bit mad never hurt either.
The 95-year-old life member was one of about 50 swimmers who kicked off the winter swimming club’s 40th season today in relatively tropical 22°C water.
‘‘It’s not much good for winter swimming, we need it colder than that,’’ Mr Carpenter said.
