A woman has been taken to hospital after she was hit by a car at Merewether this evening.
Police said the pedestrian was struck by a car at Frederick Street about 6pm.
She was taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition after suffering head injuries, police said.
The driver of the car, a 37-year-old man, will undergo mandatory testing.
A NSW Police spokesman said crash investigators were examining the scene and expected Frederick Street to remain closed for several hours.
