PLANNING for an indoor heated swimming pool in Maitland is in full swing, with Maitland City Council looking at design options and costing.
Councillors discussed the plan, which has been on the drawing board for several years, at a meeting last night.
Cr Bob Geoghegan supported an officer’s report to review the Maitland Aquatic Facility Development Strategy and also pushed for the council to accept a proposal to partially enclose Maitland’s existing public pool into its final strategy.
He said the council should consider the feasibility and cost of the partial enclosure of Maitland Baths as a means of converting it into a year-round 25 metre heated pool.
Cr Geoghegan said this could be a short-term option, while the plan to build a new indoor heated pool adjacent to the existing baths in Maitland Park could take years.
A report to last night’s council meeting said Maitland and East Maitland aquatic centres were ‘‘still continuing to perform below industry averages for similar facilities operating in similar population areas’’.
The Maitland Aquatic Facility Development Strategy 2012 provides a strategy for the future development of aquatics centres.
