Campbell’s high five for Sharks

MEREWETHER’S Richie Campbell led the way as Australia’s water polo team maintained their unbeaten record in an Olympic warm-up event in Asia.

The Sharks belted London Olympics rivals Kazakhstan 15-3 in their penultimate FINA World League preliminary match in Chiba, Japan, on Wednesday night.

Campbell bagged a game-high five goals, Rhys Howden netted three and Anthony Martin and Johnno Cotterill scored two each. The Sharks scored 11 goals to two during a frenetic 16-minute period in the second and third terms to take control of the contest.

It was Australia’s fifth win on the trot as they prepare for the World League finals in Kazakhstan on June 12 and the London Olympics in August. They were due to play China overnight.

Campbell, who grew up in Merewether but plays for UNSW Wests Magpies in the national water polo league, played in the 2008 Olympics.

He could be joined in the Australian team in London by Hunter Hurricanes centre forward Mitch Baird, 26.
