More than 300 farewell Margaret Goumas at service

MORE than 300 people turned out for the funeral of Newcastle identity Margaret Goumas at the Holy Apostles Church in Hamilton this morning.

Father Nicholas Scordilis presided over a Greek Orthodox ceremony with words in both English and Greek.

‘‘With the Saints give rest, O Christ, to the soul of Your servant where there is no pain, nor suffering but everlasting,’’ Father Nicholas told the mourners.

Former Newcastle lord mayor John McNaughton gave the eulogy for Mrs Goumas, who died last Thursday.

Mr McNaughton said Mrs Goumas and her husband Theo had both made significant contributions to life in Newcastle.

At the close of the ceremony Mrs Goumas was piped from the church and taken to be buried at Sandgate cemetery.
