The career of a corrective services officer charged with assaulting a prisoner in the Newcastle Courthouse cells is "hanging by a knife edge" a court heard this morning.
Terry Dolling's sentencing hearing in Toronto Local Court was adjourned to next week by magistrate Jennifer Atkinson.
Mr Dolling's barrister, Stephen Russell, told the court his client "always struggled to understand why he lost his discipline" after a prisoner infected with Hepatitis C spat in his eyes.
The court was told it will be up to the NSW Department of Corrective Services to decide whether he keeps his job.
