THE Medicare branch in Newcastle’s Hunter Street Mall is shutting and its services will move to a nearby Centrelink office.
The Department of Human Services has confirmed the Medicare office will move on June 25 to Centrelink at 279 King Street.
Department general manager Hank Jongen said the branch staff would also be moving, with no forced redundancies.
The announcement comes after the department incorrectly informed Charlestown and Kotara medical practitioners that the Medicare outlets in those suburbs would close.
The department told the Newcastle Herald this week the suburban branches would not be shutting.
However, questioned further, the department conceded that a plan to move the Charlestown branch to the nearby Centrelink office had been considered, but was abandoned for the time being.
