Mayors call to stop redundancies

NEWCASTLE lord mayor John Tate is hoping to form a Hunter mayoral delegation to meet Fairfax Media executives in a bid to stop Newcastle Herald jobs going to New Zealand.

Cr Tate was joined by Lake Macquarie mayor Greg Piper and Maitland’s Peter Blackmore at a rally in Civic Park on Saturday to protest against a Fairfax proposal to make 41 editorial production jobs redundant. Muswellbrook mayor Martin Rush sent a letter of support that was read out to the crowd of up to 1000.

‘‘In the morning I will be contacting the mayors of the Hunter to get a delegation together to talk to the CEO [Greg Hywood] and the chairman [Roger Corbett] in a bid to get this proposal stopped,’’ Cr Tate said yesterday.

‘‘They are saying this proposal would create more efficiency in the short term but it is the long-term loss in the value of the product that will hurt the people of Newcastle and the Hunter most.’’
