IT is good news that there are now concrete plans for another entrance to the Glendale shopping complex and future Glendale transport interchange (‘‘Drive on to begin road link’’ Herald 7/6). A Pennant Street railway overbridge alone may have been of use to traffic from the east, but it would still left most traffic to be fed through the Crossroads lights and main roundabout at the entrance to the shopping precinct.
Road maps have shown for a while a proposed road from the Main Road end of Glendale Drive to connect with the road to the overbridge near the sports centre. Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery and I walked the route of this proposed road some months ago and could see that the only major works required would be a rebuilding of the Main Road/Glendale Drive intersection and a bridge over Winding Creek.
An entry to the complex from Glendale Drive, in conjunction with the overbridge, will take an enormous amount of pressure off the Crossroads and roundabout, and the benefit for public transport could be even greater. If all buses were to enter this way, no longer would services have to make a long diversion through Crossroads to serve the interchange.
