THE Newcastle Herald claimed the highest sports media accolade in regional Australia at an awards gala in Sydney last night.
The Herald won the prize for best sports journalism from rural, regional or suburban media at the Australian Sports Commission awards for a series of stories on the fortunes of mining magnate Nathan Tinkler and their effects on the Hunter sporting community.
"To be recognised nationally for our work on this - which has always been about quality journalism - is really pleasing," sports editor Kevin Cranson said.
The winning series of reports were written by journalists Robert Dillon, Donna Page, James Gardiner and Brett Keeble.
The Herald was also short-listed in the main category - best reporting of an issue in sport - which was won by Fairfax Media's Daniel Lane.
