INTERACTIVE MAP: Readers split on monorail

SUGGESTIONS the Sydney monorail could add to the Hunter’s transport network have split  Newcastle Herald readers.

More than 1200 readers voted in a Herald website poll yesterday, with about half supporting a variety of options  to bring the 25-year-old track to town.

But opponents were vocal in their objections.

‘‘They don’t even make that system any more,’’ one commenter argued.

‘‘Sydney is cheering about getting rid of it for a reason!’’

Francine Ockem raised concerns about the Hunter’s ability to support a monorail network.

‘‘Imagine how easy it will be to get it going here when it failed in Sydney,’’ she wrote.

The prospect of a Hunter monorail emerged following a state government decision to pull the system  out of Sydney over the next two years and rumours of an imminent announcement on the termination of the heavy rail line between Wickham and Newcastle stations.

Almost a quarter of Herald poll voters supported using the line as a replacement for the heavy rail corridor between Wickham and Newcastle.

Commenter Problem Solved suggested running the monorail from Kotara train station to link with the Homemaker’s Centre and Westfield centre as a useful option.

‘‘Now that would be a great idea as long as it wasn’t too costly,’’ Problem Solved wrote.

Yesterday’s  Herald report  also prompted fans of The Simpsons to quote the show’s celebrated classic episode about bringing a monorail to their home town of Springfield instead of fixing a cracked and broken main street.
