THERE were candles in the wind at Speers Point Park last night, as hundreds attended Carols by Candlelight to celebrate the onset of Christmas.
Blustery conditions and light rain dampened the event, but there was still plenty of Christmas cheer.
Irishman Darragh Kingston attended the event for the first time with his wife and four kids, having moved to Australia recently.
‘‘The kids are dancing, singing and enjoying the night,’’ Mr Kingston, of Toronto, said.
The crowd’s spirits were lifted with Christmas songs from artists including Casey Donovan and Jenny Morris.
It was the 33rd year of carols in the park, council community planning manager John Ferguson said.
‘‘The numbers are a little bit down because of the weather, but there’s still a good crowd out here,’’ Mr Ferguson said.
‘‘It’s always been a popular event.
‘‘People like carols.’’
