Skateboards v BMX at Bar Beach

FOUR wheels and two went head-to-head at Bar Beach skate park yesterday as an extreme sports road trip swept through Newcastle.

BMX riders Alex Hiam and Chris Courtenay and their skateboarding counterparts Tommy Flynn and Marty Girotto have been travelling up the east coast of Australia from Sydney to Byron Bay competing in a series of challenges unrelated to their chosen fields.

The group have abseiling, surfing, caving, rock-climbing and white water rafting on their list of extreme challenges but have still found time to drop in at bowls and skate parks across NSW.

Hiam, 17, from Brisbane, said the crew would take on some of Newcastle’s big waves after trying their hand at caving and rock-climbing during stops in Sydney, Bathurst, Dubbo and Lithgow.

‘‘The tour has been a lot of fun, the weather had been good until we arrived in Newcastle this afternoon and there was a bit of a storm,’’ he said yesterday.

‘‘But we’re going to make the most of it and we’ll be taking on the skate park a few times and getting out into the surf when we can.

‘‘The BMX riders and the skateboarders have got along really well, we really feed off each other.’’

The tour will wind up with a final event at Homebush, in Sydney, on December 19.
