A WOMAN has drowned off a Central Coast beach while another, aged 25, has been hospitalised.
Gosford police and surf lifesavers said the women were swept off rocks near the point at Avoca Beach.
A kayaker spotted the two women struggling in the water shortly after 4pm yesterday and headed to the beach for help, a Surf Life Saving NSW spokeswoman said.
The kayaker called surf club members to help the women stay afloat until lifeguards could rescue them.
Lifeguards on jetskis brought the two women back to the beach where paramedics attended.
One woman was pronounced dead.
Central Coast Surf Life Saving duty officer Stuart Harvey said he was proud of the young lifesavers who tried to save the unidentified women.
‘‘Our hearts go out to the family of the drowned woman, but thankfully the second patient is alive due to the quick actions of both the young board paddlers and the lifeguards,’’ Mr Harvey said.
The 25-year-old was in a serious but stable condition last night.
