WELL done Newcastle. The Junior National Special Olympics held in your lovely city from December 6 to 10 were absolutely outstanding. I had the thrill of travelling to Newcastle from Melbourne to watch my two gorgeous grandchildren, Courtney Holmes, 13, and Zachary Holmes, 11, compete in the games and have an absolute ball doing so.
The wonderful men and women who give up their time to organise this terrific event deserve a huge thank-you, as do all the wonderful volunteers, without whom the games would not be able to run so smoothly. To see the smiles on the faces of all the children and the look of pride in their eyes as they displayed their medals and ribbons brought a tear to one’s eye. As my young grandson said to me: ‘‘Grandma, I cannot read very well but I sure can run and swim fast.’’ The opportunity to take part in something like this does wonders for their confidence. It lets them know that they are good at something. Thank-you.
